Rocket Works Stove ETHOS 2015

ETHOS Cooking Stoves Conference in Kirkland, Washington January, 2015.
for more about the next ETHOS Conference see http://www.ethoscon.com/

The ETHOS conference brings together people involved in stove design, dissemination, and testing from Universities, Government, and Non Government organizations, and has themes around the topics of improving cook stove design and performance, reducing emissions, and improving stove adoption, but listening to the needs of the people using the stoves. It ends with the 'lighting of the stoves' which is a demonstration of some of the cooking stoves that people have talked about in the conference.

In addition to capturing photos of the stoves, this year I captured a few pictures of the crowd of attendees comparing stove designs, toasting marshmallows, etc.

The big green stove is the InStove institutional rocket stove http://instove.org/

The lovely people taking pictures were from CREEC ( Energy and Energy Conservation ) which presented a great analysis of current cooking stove tests and some insights to improve them. They also noted that fans typically fail in Uganda, and there are no fans available to replace them.
For more about CREEC see http://creec.or.ug

StoveTec and Aprovecho presented some interesting innovations in stove design that they hope to field test in the coming year. The light green stove has an insulated top door for adding fuel to their TLUD style stove. The purple stove is their rocket stove that has been optimized for improved particulate emissions, with an improved set of colors.

The stove was developed by Adrian Padt and Aidan Oosthuysen, and Richard Pocock, and uses a familiar Rocket design surrounded by a wire cage to improve the stove's stability and reduce burns. It's a smart looking stove, it saves women time and energy in gathering firewood, and it has lower emissions than the solutions it is typically replacing.

Lighting instructions:

The Rocket Works Stove, web site http://www.rocketworks.org/

  • The Rockt Works stove is a high efficiency wood burning stove, designed to accommodate multiple fuels when required.
  • It is smokeless after initial combustion, thereby reducing the likelihood of carbon monoxide poisoning and reducing the emission of black carbon particles.
  • The outer cage remains cool to touch even after hours of cooking, due to our innovative design.
  • It is made from high quality, heat resistant stainless steel allowing for years of regular use.
  • It can boil 5 liters of water in 15 minutes using as little as 250g of wood, which is significantly less than traditional cooking methods.
  • Its thermal efficiency is 45%, for the Large Pot High Power, performed by the SeTAR Thermal Efficiency Test.
  • Its emissions are the best in its class.

Basic Specification:

  • Mass: 2.95Kgs
  • Height: 270mm
  • Diameter : 240mm

Joshua B. Guinto in the Phillippines used the Oblak Holey Roket stove as inspiration and created a stove with an extra compartment to store char until cooking is done and the char is sufficiently cooled. He has done a wonderful job of writing up the results in the attached pdf.
From his conclusion:
The Charmaking Stove is Born!

  • The Char Making Holey Roket Stove is born!!
  • It allows harvesting bio char safely and conveniently and without having to tip the stove over. It eliminates the risk of heat fatigue, burns and open fires.
  • It allows clean cooking with the similar performance as a gasifier stove.
  • It allows continuous cooking.
  • The stove will last for four years or more.
  • It can be used with many other kinds of fuels.
  • The stove is much cheaper and can be fabricated in village workshops thus promotes social inclusion much better.
  • With clay, the stove has very small ecological footprint.

Jed started with the Rok Oblak Holey Roket stove:
http://stoves.bioenergylists.org/taxonomy/term/243

and has been making improvements to the design detailed in the pdf, and has these lovely stoves made with the help of the artists he's been working with in the Philippines.

These are the features that he's working to include in the latest batch of stoves:

  • A side fed fuel chamber allows for continuous cooking.
  • Better flame control.
  • Eliminating the risk of handling hot char.
  • Allowing for multiple fuel types
  • Clay is less expensive than metal.
  • Clay stimulates employment, social inclusion, and creativity
  • Clay stoves are heavier and brittle but they outlast equivalent metal stoves, some lasting for longer than 3 years of continuous use.

The first two stoves in the attached i already am making since the past years. And recently, i have been teaching women and soon their husbands to also make their rocket stoves here in the province of Bulacan under a disaster preparedness program by the Save the Children International. They also make their own designs of flowers, castle towers, chess characters, and faces into their stoves.

the drawing in the third attachment is a prototype in process. It is a Holey Rocket Stove with a char pocket on the side and a box as a platform. I hope to finish it in the coming weeks.

Institutional Stove Solutions - InStove

Aprovecho's larger stoves - the instiutional stoves group, have now branched out and become

Institutional Stove Solutions (inStove)

http://instove.org/

They are using the same rocket stove, and have perfected a 60L stove for institutional stove.

They are focusing on schools and other institutions, and have attached an autoclave for hospital and clinic use.

They've found a way to do "Stove factory in a Box", and have perfected a way to build the stove with local labor, and with all tools provided in the factory box and requires only a small generator to operate long term. AIR JORDAN

Rogerio Carneiro de Miranda shared his new video that highlights the features of the Ecofogão in Brazil.

It is is a rocket style stove that uses wood to heat a cast iron griddle and an oven. It is an efficient stove that also includes an chimney, and the option to build it into an attractive and functional kitchen island. They also have an option that heats water (for washing or bathing).

For more information, and pictures, and to buy the stove, see their website:
