[4] There, where a relative small amount of water, but a stronger
pressure is available, we use as well a sort of undershot water-wheel, by
using the high water-pressure with very high speed to bound against the
paddles of the wheel.
"

"

[5] We use thus as by the undershot Wheel, the kinetic energy.

[6] The big strain of the paddles, in follow of the high speed and
the out of that following big revolutionsnumber requires from the
pelton-wheel a totally different, far more stable construction, which will
be now described in detail.

[7] Onto the circumference (Figure 135) are fixed a number of
peculiar shovels, which one in its compact form is shown in figure 135 A.

[img_assist|nid=1282|title=Figure 136|desc=|link=node|align=left|width=200|height=103]

[8] Against theses shovels, the water-jet is directed, and quasi
caught by the both hutches, so that the water on that cannons back.

[9] Thereby yon reaction-effect occurs, which we have already
discussed above by dealing with the turbine-principle.

[10] If we want to reach a good effect with our pelton-wheel, we must
form the shovels so, that the single parts of the water-jet are preferably
forced to controlled turning back; by that serve just the both hutches of
the shovels, which direct the jet to the right, the left and down.

[11] There are built wheels with diameter from 0.5 up to 1.5 meter.

[img_assist|nid=1313|title=Pelton Wheel Assembly|desc=Figures 137, 138 & 140|link=node|align=left|width=200|height=192]

[12] The breadth of the shovels differs between approximately 0.5 and
1.5 meter; there are used broader shovels for bigger water-masses than for
smaller.

[13] By a water-pressure of 20 to 25 kg/cm2 and a wheel from about 1
meter diameter and 7 cm breadth we can expect a power of 5 to 10 PS
(horse-power)

[14] We get the needed water-pressure, when we guide the water out of
sufficient height in a closed tube to the Pelton-wheel.

[15] We can calculate for each 10m height a pressure of 1kg/cm2.

[16] For a small model-installation, a pressure of about 2kg/cm2 is
sufficient.

[img_assist|nid=1287|title=Pelton Wheel|desc=Figure 140|link=node|align=left|width=200|height=120]

[17] If the amount of water is sufficient, it is by low pressure of
advantage, to direct two jets (one from under and one from above) to the
wheel.

[18] If there is a fall-hight of 100 to 200m (10 to 20 kg/cm2), and
we give the wheel a diameter from about 70cm, a breadth of about 8cm, and
ist he outcoming water-jet 2.5cm to 3cm thick, so we can expect a power of
6 to 8 PS (Pferdestärke=Horse power) from our installation.

[19] The feeding-tube, which leads the water to the nozzle, must be 4
to 6 times broader than the nozzle-cross-section.

[20] When we want to construct for us a pelton-wheel of that power
with simple things, so we first make the wheel-body out of a dense but not
too hard wood (poplar, as well good knob-free fir wood), by putting together
the wheel-disk out of single planks, like observable out of Fig. 136 B.

[21] To be the firmness of the wheel-disk to all sides the same (and
not less in transverse direction to the fibres), so we construct the 7cm
thick disc in the way, that we make seven single slices out of merely 1cm
thick planks and nail them firmly on each other.

[22] But thereby - and that is the main thing by that method- must be
paid attention, that the fibre-direction of each layer against the following
is twisted for 30°; so it comes than, that the fibres of the seventh plank
is again unidirectional to the first.

[img_assist|nid=1286|title=Pelton Wheel|desc=Figure 141|link=node|align=left|width=200|height=81]

[img_assist|nid=1285|title=Nozzle|desc=Figure 139|link=node|align=left|width=200|height=121]

[23] We can as well take less than seven but therefore thicker
layers, but not less then three.

[24] Before we nail together the single disks, we cut for the
tetragonal shaft in each the accordant hole, because the single disks are to
treat easier than the thick mass of the ready one.

[25] In addition it is advisable, to pour asphalt between the single
layers at any one time, before we nail them together.

[26] The wood should be pre-warmed somewhat, that the asphalt does
not already solidify during nailing together.

[27] This procedure protects the wheel, which is exposed to wetness,
definitely.

[28] The shaft gets the form, in Fig.136 C visible.

[29] After the shaft is inserted, it is necessary to make the
circumference of our disk exactly round.

[30] The most safe procedure was dressing the size on a lathe.

[31] Because such in that size are not accessible always easily, so
we must manage with a simpler procedure.

[32] We put the shaft into its bearing, bring an object into the
nearby of the disk and turn these; so we recognize simply, on which places
material has to be removed.

[33] When the disk is well rounded, so onto the circumference, like
to see out of Fig. 135 B, single wood-slads are nailed directly side by
side.

[34] Here too, the pouring hot asphalt between is advisable.

[35] The shovels itself should have the shape of Fig. 136 D.

[36] We can have them cast out of bronze or out of good brass.

[37] These shovels have to be screwed with strong screws onto the
circumference.

[38] When we want to spare the expense for casting the shovels, we
can proceed in the manner shown in Fig. 137 A

[39] The shovel has to be made out of one piece of sheet-metal, the
form of which is drawn in Fig. 137 B; is it at the dotted lines plied, so
gets it the form shown in C.

[40] Also a dichotomy of those shovels is recommendable; one achieves
that by an intermediate wall out of scheet-metal, which is plied out of a
piece figured in D.

[41] The standing over tabs of these shovels are scewed on the side
of the wheel, like to see in Fig. 137A, whereby the stability best is
reached; hereby is to work with special accuracy, because the very big
centrifugal-forces caused by the high rotation-rate.

[42] The Pelton-wheel has to be built into a very stable base frame
(out of wood or metal), how shown in Fig. 138.

[43] To catch the strong splashing water, we built above the wheel a
box out of sheet-metal, the contours are shown dotted in Fig. 138.

[44] The base frame takes at the same time the nozzle, which is
figured apart in fig. 139.

[img_assist|nid=1284|title=Pelton Wheel Assembly|desc=Figure 138|link=node|align=left|width=200|height=160]

[img_assist|nid=1283|title=Pelton Wheel Shovels|desc=Figure 137|link=node|align=left|width=200|height=78]

[45] It must be built into the base frame very strongly, because otherwise it
could, by the reaction-pressure in the tube, hurtle backwards out of the
base frame.

[46] Further it is of advantage, to mount directly behind the nozzle
a valve B, which is by means of a dilatation-connection C connected onto
conduct D.

[img_assist|nid=1281|title=Pelton Wheel|desc=Figure 133 & 134|link=node|align=left|width=200|height=114]

[47] The Pelton-wheel has according to the big outflow-speed of the
water, a very big rotation-number.

[48] Therefore one can use the Pelton-wheel to drive
dynamo-machinery.

[49] But for the most other purposes e.g. drive of a saw-mill, must
be reduced the rotation-number accordingly from a small wheel on the
wheel-shaft to a big one at the working machinery.

CONSTRUCTION:

For the small Pelton-model I translated the instruction now:

Construction of a small Pelton-wheel:

Out of: Werkbuch fuer Jungen von Rudolf Wollmann 7. Auflage, Otto Maier
Verlag Ravensburg (approx. from 1950!! )

(Handicraft-book for boys)

Fig. 136 (=Abb.136 ) shows the model in cut (the wheel in side-view) Abb.
138 in view. The wheel-body R exists out of a 25mm thick circle wood-disk,
80mm in diameter, with a central 6mm borehole. The 8 shovels are cut out of
0.8mm thick sheet-aluminium (see Abb. 137). The lashes have two (2mm
diameter) holes for the fixing screws. The sheet-metals are plied as Abb.
137. Mind, bend the middle-edge with a flat-pliers as cut-edge-like as
possible. The shovels are fixed in equal distance to each other onto the
wheel-body with 4 small screws, in the manner, that the shovels are a little
bit reclined how in the figure shown.

[img_assist|nid=1312|title=Cross Section|desc=Figure 136|link=node|align=left|width=200|height=148]

The turbine-housing is constructed out of 1cm thick hardwood-planks. The
measures are shown in the figures. The back-wall-plank V gets in the middle,
55mm distant from the bottom, a borehole, about 10 to 12 mm diameter.
Therein inserted: a equal-sized glass-tube with some tapered mouth. The
front-plank is only made 16cm long, to form a window A from 35 x 20 mm. The
side-walls S get at the specified place each a borehole from 6mm diameter,
the bearing of the shaft. Before mounting the base-plank, bring the wheel
into the mounted housing and put the shaft - a approx. 70mm long piece of
round-bar (6mm diameter) through wheel and housing-walls. In the same time,
put between wheel-body and each side-wall, a fitting shim -3 to 4 mm thick B
(Abb. 136)- onto the shaft. The shaft must turn easily in the bearings.
Otherwise they must be filed out a little bit. At the side where the shaft
sticks out more, press a reel onto it. Move the tube Z as far into the
housing, that -by turning the wheel- it is just not hit by the shovels. Now
you can fix the ground-plank.

If you find cutting and bending the Pelton-shovels is too difficult, you can
mount in that place simple curved shovels. The measures are shown in Abb.
139. The model is connected to the water-conduit by a rubber-tube.

Peltonrad

Herstellung kleiner Modelle

[3] Unter Mitbenuetzung von (With joint use of )

angebracht, deren eine in ihrer gedrungenen Form in Abb. 135 A dargestellt
