Proximate analysis

The percentage of moisture is found by heating a 1-g sample of the fuel to about 225 F to evaporate the water and by measuring the loss in weight of the original sample.
By heating a 1-g sample in an airtight crucible for 7 min at about 1750 F, the volatile mater and the moisture are expelled from the sample without igniting the fixed carbon. The percentage of volatile matter is the loss in weight upon heating the sample minus the percentage of moisture already found.

In firewood, 80% of the matter released as volatile matters, 20 % remains as charcoal.

Ash is measured same manner as ultimate analysis.
