T-LUD Pellet Stove at BSNB4
Kevin Chisholm, July 8, 2006

I have had the opportunity to attend a local event, the BSNB4 on 2 June 2006, where some impressive technology, at early stages of development, was presented. One of the presentations, a T-LUD pellet stove, burning a 25 pound bag of wood pellets in 15 minutes, had a few rough edges, but it certainly brings the T-LUD to a new height. A suitable exhaust hood would, of course, be required for safe indoor use. See picture.

160 grams of charcoal boils and simmers 5 liters/CF04 Stove
Lanny Henson www.lanny.us July 2, 2006

The CF04 Stove boiled and simmered 5 liters using only 160gr of charcoal and wood.

After several modifications to 4 different prototypes, it only took 150 gr of lump charcoal with 11% moisture and 10gr of wood to boil 5 liters of 83 degF/28.3 degC water in 45 min. That is 32 grams per liter to boil and simmer. At 1 hour after boiling the water was still simmering at 100 degC and after 2 hours the water was 205degF/96 degC. At this point I shut the air control and capped the pot module to stop the airflow and retain heat.

At 3 hours the water temp was 190 degF/87.8 degC and was 178 degF/ 81 degC at 4 hours.

CO/CO2 Ratio in the Charcoal Stoves Tested at Aprovecho (pdf)
Dean Still, Aprovecho Research Center, June 23, 2006

The following graph plots the levels of CO and CO2 during one test each of the charcoal burning rocket stove and Jiko-type charcoal stove from Ghana. A higher level of CO2 suggests a higher burn rate of fuel.

It can be seen that even though the CO level for the rocket drops below 10 ppm, the CO2 level remains high suggesting a high firepower continues. The Ghana charcoal stove has a lower level of CO2 with a considerably higher level of CO.

Big Improvements For Small Cooking Stoves: The Benefits of Heat Recycling

ETHOS CONFERENCE 31 Jan to 1 Feb 2004

These days so much is known about combustion that efficient and nearly complete
combustion can be basically taken for granted, even if the knowledge has not been put into
practice. Combustion geeks now focus to making incremental improvements in the removal
of unwanted combustion products, largely PICs and CO.

Comparing the Charcoal Burning Rocket and Jiko Stoves (pdf)
Dean Still and Nordica MacCarty, Aprovecho Research Center, June 22nd, 2006

The charcoal Rocket Stove was compared to the Jiko-type charcoal stove sent from Ghana. 600 grams of Kingsford charcoal was placed in the stoves under the Aprovecho emissions hood. One test was performed on each stove for preliminary studies. The stoves are compared in the following graph for carbon monoxide emissions during a cooking task (to boil 5L of water and simmer 30 minutes).

Center Fire Stove 01 Cooking Test
Lanny Henson, June 12, 2006

In the last cooking test, the Center Fire Stove 01 needed only 750
grams/1.65 lb of pine chips to cook 8 pounds/3.63 kilograms dry weight of pintos. That is 14 liters of volume with water or 104 servings-35 gr/ 1/2 cup cooked volume (1/4 cup dry weight) servings.

Pema Pot Skit

There seems to be actual agreement that pot skirts make combustion stoves better.
It is clear however that the bulk of deployed stoves do not have pot skirts.
Therefore an inexpensive pot skirt that could be made in the third and fourth world for those deployed stoves would have some usefulness.

The mass production of insulated bricks for Six Bricks Rocket Stoves means that there are many broken bricks. Everyone wants these broken bricks.

The Sprocket Rocket was the idea and creation of Mary, one of our stove promoters and teachers. Seated here on the right she is demonstrating how to wire together SixBricks.

The half bricks are wired together in the same fashion.

Some people use insulated bricks only for the top half.files/images/sprocket5_0.jpg

Ken Goyer describes the "sprocket rocket" charcoal stove and its use in Uganda.

This is a bicycle sprocket. I was visiting a camp near Lira and this woman came along holding this sprocket. She said that she was planning to make a Sprocket Rocket and that she had paid 1000 shillings (about 54 cents) for it.

This modular stove is built from used metal containers.

It has a center fire burner module, a sunken 8-liter pot module, and an insulated/ chip drying top cap.
The burner and is made from an institutional food can. It takes all the ware and stress from the fire protecting the rest of the stove body. They are easy to build and can act as fuel cartridges to store fuel for quick and easy use.
The burner module, under development, adds secondary combustion air to the top of the burner.

Here is a series of photos of the open source paraffin stove being made by New Dawn Engineering. Not shown are the external tank and hose which can be any suitable size or material. It is an FSP stove by type, which is a 'gravity stove' operating at a slightly elevated pressure but without a pump or compressed tank.

This stove is self-extinguishing if tipped over and features a high flame temperature, low CO emissions, excellent stability and robust construction. All the parts are separately replaceable. The frame is mild steel flat bar and the other parts are stainless steel save the screws. The CO/CO2 ratio is particulary low at less than 0.05%. The heating power is 600 to 1800 watts varied by the brass control valve. The pot rests can be changed by the user. The basic unit without the top deck can be bolted under other devices like baking ovens or water heaters.

The fuel consumption is about 6 or more hours per litre on high and 12 hours turned down to 'half'.
